Vliegen naar Athene voor een vergadering is passé, gelukkig. Welke andere manieren gebruiken bedrijven om hun zakenreizen te verduurzamen? En hoe zit het met de rapporteringsregels? We lieten vier experten van PwC, Nestlé Nespresso, Anthesis en Sweco aan het woord: ontdek hier hun gouden tips.

Recent werd in De Standaard beweerd dat het niet uitmaakt of je binnen Europa het vliegtuig of de trein neemt, omdat bespaarde CO2-uitstoot via het emissiehandelsysteem (ETS) elders alsnog zou worden uitgestoten. Zo blijft het systeem in balans. Een wel héél bijzondere redenering. Collega Naomi Cambien legt uit waarom inzetten op de trein als bedrijf wél zin heeft. 

“Bij Nestlé streven we ernaar om tegen 2050 netto nul CO2-uitstoot te bereiken, waarbij we ook de uitstoot van onze zakenreizen willen verminderen. Daarom geven we prioriteit aan duurzame reiskeuzes.” vertelt Elien Spooren, sustainability manager Belux bij Nestlé Nespresso. Zij hebben onlangs een nieuwe, duurzame travel policy gelanceerd voor al hun medewerkers. Wat was hun drijfveer, hoe motiveren ze hun werknemers en wat hebben ze geleerd uit het hele proces?

KU Leuven is working hard to make their employee travel policy more sustainable. We spoke to Annelies Van Zutphen, coordinator of the sustainable travel policy, about their approach, the challenges they encountered and what others can learn from their process.

New analysis by T&E shows that while an impressive number of tech companies have cut their flying in half since 2019, companies which have not set targets to reduce flying emissions are slowly creeping back to 2019 levels. These include tech giants Google and Apple.

What a pleasure it was to get together again with the Business Travel Pioneers! The leaders in sustainable business travel were yet again able to update each other on the sustainability of their organizations' travel policies. Meanwhile, the group also had some new participants. Let’s look back on the meeting.

In een nieuwe studie in opdracht van Bond Beter Leefmilieu maakt Transport en Mobility Leuven een gedetailleerde vergelijking tussen luchtvaart en spoor op vlak van duurzaamheid, toegankelijkheid en overheidssteun. Voor het eerst berekenen ze hierbij ook de milieukost voor 24 populaire bestemmingen. Zo heeft een vlucht naar Frankfurt een milieukost van €38 per persoon, terwijl diezelfde reis via de trein slechts €5 noteert. Ook blijkt dat de klimaatimpact van de luchtvaart sterk onderschat wordt en de sector tegelijkertijd tot meer dan een miljard euro subsidies ontvangt.

Zakenreizigers nemen steeds minder het vliegtuig en een groot deel van de Belgische werknemers is voorstander van een duurzaam reisbeleid. Maar wanneer puntje bij paaltje komt, doet het prijskaartje bedrijven toch kiezen voor vliegen in plaats van treinen. Dit toont een nieuwe casestudie van Universiteit Antwerpen. Alleen forse maatregelen door de overheid kunnen hier verandering in brengen.

Het aandeel van de internationale trein in zakenreizen van en naar Nederland is op korte tijd sterk gegroeid. Vier op de vijf reizen tot 400 kilometer gaat nu per spoor en één op de vijf tot 700 kilometer. Dat blijkt uit een analyse van reisgedrag onder grote werkgevers, gedaan door de Coalitie Anders Reizen en Natuur & Milieu.

Bedrijven en organisaties botsen te vaak op drempels bij het implementeren van een duurzame travel policy. Zo loopt het boeken van treinverplaatsingen soms erg moeizaam, voldoet het internationaal treinaanbod niet altijd of zijn de passagiersrechten teleurstellend. Het is aan het beleid om deze drempels weg te nemen en de huidige trend naar meer duurzaam reisgedrag te versterken en te verankeren. We maakten een overzicht op met de belangrijkste handvaten voor een sterk beleidskader dat duurzame zakenreizen een boost geeft.

Heel wat bedrijven stoten minder CO2 uit door anders te reizen. Dat gebeurt door minder te reizen en te kiezen voor online meetings, maar ook door steeds vaker de trein te verkiezen boven het vliegtuig. Er zijn echter nog veel kansen om deze transitie te versnellen. Dat lukt alleen maar als alle spelers in de keten hun verantwoordelijkheid nemen en hun beleid aanpassen. Volgende aanbevelingen kunnen de transitie versnellen.

More than three in five Belgian business travellers now fly less than before the pandemic. The majority of employees think this is an important way to reduce the company's climate impact and want a sustainable travel policy. This is according to a new survey by the Travel Smart Campaign.

12 companies and universities, representing a total of about 48,000 employees, today officially joined the Business Travel Pioneers, an initiative of Bond Beter Leefmilieu. By doing so, the signatories commit to drawing up concrete sustainable travel policies to reduce the climate impact of their business trips. In the presence of Minister Gilkinet, the forerunners signed the coalition's engagement statement.

Top managers should introduce measures to reduce business flights, three quarters of employees think, according to a recent survey. Not just for its footprint, sustainable travel policies are also an important asset for employee wellbeing and in the war for talent. How much CO₂ can you save if you take the train or bus from Brussels for a city trip instead of flying? Research firm Transport & Mobility Leuven (TML) mapped it out for the 25 most popular European destinations. Conclusion: the train or long-distance bus have a significantly lower climate impact each time. It's up to the government to guide citizens' choices with investments in public transport and airline taxes.

Aviation today accounts for about 3.5 percent of Europe's CO2 emissions. And that share is increasing at a rapid pace. Over the past 30 years, aviation emissions have doubled, and they are expected to triple by 2050. This puts enormous pressure on the climate. The share of business travellers in this cannot be underestimated. As a company, how can you become a pioneer of sustainable change?
